ロンドンのヴィクトリア・アンド・アルバート博物館で開催され、開館150年の歴史でも空前の来場者記録を打ち立てたデヴィッド・ボウイのキャリアを振り返る展覧会『David Bowie Is』。この展覧会が来週からはカナダのアート・ギャラリー・オブ・オンタリオでも開かれることになるが、この機会にギャラリーのキュレーターがデヴィッドの勧める100冊の本を発表している。

リストは現在から1945年まで遡るものとなっていて、ジャック・ケルアックの『路上にて』やトルーマン・カポーティの『冷血』など、50年代や60年代のアメリカの名作小説や同時期のイギリスのキース・ウォーターハウスの『うそつきビリー』やジョン・ブレインの『年上の女』などといった名作、さらにコリン・ウィルソンの評論集『アウトサイダー』などが挙げられている。

その一方で心理療法と想像性を扱い、心理学書として哲学にも大きな影響を与えたといわれるロナルド・D・レインの『ひき裂かれた自己』やジュリアン・ジェインズの『神々の沈黙‐意識の誕生と文明の興亡』なども挙げられていて、スティーヴン・ホーキンズなどといった自然科学方面の著作は挙げられていないものの、デヴィッドが相当に幅広く読書していることが窺われる内容になっている。

政治関連ではアメリカのキッシンジャー元国務長官を糾弾する『アメリカの陰謀とヘンリー・キッシンジャー』やソ連でのスターリン体制の確立までの歩みを追ったオーランドー・ファイジズの『A People's Tragedy』やインタヴュー集なども挙げている。

最も多岐に富んでいるのはやはり文芸方面で、イアン・マキューアンの『ベッドのなかで』、マーティン・エイミスの『Money』、サラ・ウォーターズの『荊の城』、ジュノ・ディアスの『オスカー・ワオの短く凄まじい人生』など、様々な趣向の作品が取り上げられている。また、コメディアンのスパイク・ミリガンのギャグ小説『Puckoon』のほか、イギリスのコミック誌『ヴィズ』や時事風刺誌『プライヴェート・アイ』の全巻もデヴィッドは推薦している。

そして、音楽関連書ももちろんデヴィッドは挙げているが、特にソウル関係が多く、ピーター・ギュラルニックの『スウィート・ソウル・ミュージック―リズム・アンド・ブルースと南部の自由への夢』、ジェリー・ハーシーの『The Story of Soul Music』やチャーリー・ジレットの『The Sound Of The City: The Rise Of Rock And Roll』などが推薦されている。
