NYのインディ・シーンの中心地であったと言えるレコード店Other Musicが今週末6月25日に閉店することになった。閉店を前に、この20年間で一番売れたアルバム100枚のリストを発表している。こちら。ベルセバ強し。ヨ・ラ・テンゴ、キャット・パワーなどが多くランクインしているのと、中でもコーネリアスが大健闘しているのが目立つ。

私もかつては毎週のように通い、今週のおすすめ棚を食い入る様に見つめていた。上のリストから何枚買ったことか。しかし、いつの間にか行かなくなった張本人だ。最近では売り上げを伸ばしているアナログ盤のスペースが増えていたけど、それだけでは無理だったよう。レコード店に限らず、現在マンハッタン内の様々な老舗レストラン、カフェなど、地元民に愛された店がどんどん閉店している。あまりに地価が高くなって家賃が払えなくなったからだ。Kim's Video and Musicという地元民には恐らくOther Musicより愛されていたレコード店兼ビデオ店は早々に閉店してしまったが、レコード店などはレコードの売り上げ低下と家賃高騰でダブルパンチということなのだと思う。Other Musicの閉店は使い古された表現だが、さすがにある時代の終わりを感じる。

ただ、ブルックリンにはむしろレコード店は増えているので、これで音楽が消えてしまったわけではないと思う。一時代を支えてくれたOther Music、ありがとう。
